Early Life

On October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born.
As a child, Marshall Mathers moved from Missouri to Detroit multiple times, spending time living in public housing projects.

He recounted in interviews, I would change schools at least twice or three times a year. That was probably the toughest part about the whole ordeal.
The ever-changing environment of this lifestyle left an indelible impression on his personality, specifically a lack of close friends, being generally reserved, and an outsider everywhere he went.

Beaten up in the bathrooms, the hallways, and even slammed in lockers, he recollected.
He attended Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan, where he failed the ninth grade three times and eventually dropped out at the age of 17. Nevertheless, He has always loved the language and took delight in comics and reading dictionaries.

No matter how poorly I did in school and no matter how low my grades may have been at any time, I always excelled at English. And I feel that I should have all these words at my disposal–in my vocabulary–all the time so that I have them ready when I need them. They’ll always be somewhere–locked away.

Ex-Wife and Daughter

Eminem had only been 15 years old when he met 13-year-old Kim Ann Scott at a house party. Kim, who did not know her father and had been sexually abused by her stepfather, came to live with Eminem and his mother Deborah.

Eminem and Kim started dating, but it wasn’t an easy ride right from the get-go. Kim’s mom, Deborah, threw them out when Eminem dropped out of school. In 1995, the couple had their first daughter named Hailie Jade. The couple separated many times and got back together but only married right before Eminem went on his first major tour in 1999. The divorce was finalized in 2000.

Kim and Eminem had a contentious on-and-off relationship until they remarried in 2006, then they got a divorce several months later. After their second divorce, the two parents went to war with one another in a protracted and ugly custody battle over their daughter, Hailie.
Eminem has spoken about Hailie over his entire career, including on the 2004 song Mockingbird and on his 2017 album Revival. Hailie graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in psychology and has become an Instagram influencer.

Career

Having dropped out of high school as a teenager, Eminem found a way to release his youth anger and his passion for language through the musical genre of hip-hop. He was very taken with N.W.A., an especially popular, yet highly controversial Los Angeles-based gangster rap crew of the 1980s and early 1990s.

To mask his insecurities about the position he was in, Eminem adopted the stage name M&M, short for his initials, which he soon started spelling out phonetically as Eminem.
He might be white and blonde, but nonetheless Eminem succeeded in the competitive world of Detroit rap with skill.

Eventually, I realized, this guy over here may have more girls or nicer clothes, or whatever. But he can’t do what I’m doing. You know what I mean? He can’t write what I’m writing now. And it felt like, maybe people are starting to give me some respect.

During this time of Eminem’s life, he struggled to support himself through odd jobs and attempting to participate in rap battles and secure a recording contract, a dramatization of which can be seen in his semi-autobiographical film from 2002, 8 Mile.
Eminem later went on to become one of the most acclaimed rap artists in the genre’s brief history, as much as any other individual artist, and he was instrumental in bringing rap to mainstream attention.

Parents

Eminem’s father, Marshall Mathers Jr., abandoned his family when Eminem was only an infant and rebuffed all of Eminem’s many attempts to contact him when Eminem was a child.

This led to him being raised by his single mother, Deborah Mathers. he has made scathing remarks about her child-rearing methods. In one of his song lyrics, he accuses her of being addicted to prescription drugs, of having subjected him to emotional and physical abuse, among other things.

Deborah denied all of these accusations, but in 1999 she filed a $10 million lawsuit against her son. They settled the case for $25,000.

In 2008, Debbie published My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem: Setting the Record Straight on My Life As Eminem’s Mother, a memoir about their complicated relationship and telling her side of the story. She explains in her book that she never exploited her son and only focused on caring for him and his siblings.
