Early Life and Career

Born on January 17, 1957 in Welch, West Virginia, to coal miner Jesse Harvey, Broderick Harvey is the youngest of five children, four of whom have succumbed to black lung disease.
His family moved to Cleveland when he was young, where Harvey graduated from Glenville High School before attending West Virginia University and working a number of jobs without feeling like he found his calling.

In 1985, he first tried his hand at stand-up comedy for the first time and became fairly popular after a decade’s worth of performing in smaller clubs. Towards the end of the decade, he had the potential to hit it big when he became one of the finalists of the 1989 Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search.

Personal and Family Life

In contrast to a large proportion of Christian adults, Harvey has been married three times. He has twin daughters, Brandi and Karli, and a son, Broderick Jr., from his first marriage, and a son, Wynton, from his second.

Steve Harvey enjoys spending time with his large family, which consists of his wife, who he has three children with, and himself. The comedian is also the proud head of The Steve Harvey Foundation, which offers mentoring programs to young men.

When he spoke to The New York Times in 2010, he stated, I’m 53 now and I am considering my responsibilities to my family and the listeners to my show, and I just reached the point where it has to be more than laughs. I know it sounds corny, but I’m starting to seriously think about the legacy I will leave when I am gone, about whether I want to be known just as a comedy king. Been there, done that.

Books

By 2009, Harvey was a best-selling author of relationship advice books that came out of his segments on his radio show in which he gave sound advice to female callers who are unhappy with their male partner’s behavior.

Rather than going with Harvey’s simpler explanations, critics said he’s been focusing on unsubstantiated gender clichés. However, readers, and not just female ones, took his straight-talking, no-nonsense advice on how to woo men and appreciate them and didn’t question his unsubstantiated gender clichés. Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man made it to the bestseller list on its debut in 2009, before being turned into a 2012 movie Think Like a Man.

Radio Show, More Film and TV Roles

In 2000, Steve Harvey launched a talk radio show, The Steve Harvey Morning Show, which at first aired only in L.A. and Dallas, but gradually gained a national reach and is still airing today. The winner of the 2007 Radio & Records magazine’s national Syndicated Personality/Show of the Year award was Harvey.

In the meantime, while undergoing a career transformation into a successful radio personality, he never neglected other pursuits in stand-up and acting. The Steve Harvey Show on WB went off the air in 2002 after six years on the air, but Harvey immediately started pursuing other projects. He hosted a short-lived WB reality show contest called Steve Harvey’s Big Time.

This show aired for only two years, but he also made his big-screen acting debut in the 2003 film The Fighting Temptations, followed by major roles in 2004’s You Got Served, the 2004 Johnson Family Vacation, and (as a voice actor) in the 2005 film Racing Stripes.

‘Family Feud’ and Talk Shows

In 2010, Harvey got an opportunity to take over a prominent game show called Family Feud, which allows him to display his humor to the public while being exposed to everyday people. at the time he was shooting the show, Harvey thought, Wow, you really know how to handle everyday people, to which he thought to himself, Yeah, because I’ve got a lot of money right now.

In 2012, TV personality Steve Harvey launched his daytime talk show which garnered multiple Daytime Emmy Awards and an NAACP Image Award for its host. In 2017, Steve Harvey eliminated production and focused on hosting his new talk show, Steve, which shifted its focus more toward famous people and less on the human interest stories from his old show.
