Prior to music, Yaw Tog was a footballer and had hopes to be a professional footballer; he had played as a defender at juvenile levels in Santasi, although his mother, Mrs. Joyce Mensah, was against him pursuing a career in football which pushed him to other endeavors. After being inspired by Ghanaian rapper Kwesi Arthur, Yaw Tog found his love for music and began writing and making music in 2018.

Yaw Tog’s entry into the music industry became a rising force after he became a member of the music group “Asaaka” along with O’Kenneth, City Boy, Reggie and Jay Bahd. They would become one of the first groups to create what is known as Kumerica drill music, which was influenced by Western hip-hop music while infusing their Ghanaian heritage. Furthermore, they would also use Kumerican terms, slang and in their lyrics.
Yaw Tog’s breakout single in 2020 was “Sore”, a high-tempo, instrumental drill song that embodies Ghanaian traditional style. The music video got 2 million views on YouTube within the first 24 hours of its release and attain international attention. Yaw Tog would later go on to release the remix of “Sore” featuring Kwesi Arthur and British rapper Stormzy, which secured Yaw Tog’s position as an international artist.
