Before entering politics, Senator Douye taught at several government schools in rural Rivers State. He is the First National Organizing Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress (I.N.C.), Ijaw Nation’s main organization. During the term of Bayelsa State’s first executive governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, he was named executive secretary of the Centre for Youth Development. He was appointed as the Commissioner for Youth and Sports of Bayelsa State during Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. Diri was a member of the governing council at the University of Maiduguri from 2000 until 2012.
In 2012, he was also the head of Bayelsa State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Disciplinary Council. In August 2012, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff at Government House, and a year later he was promoted to Principal Executive Secretary, a position he held until 2014, when he resigned to run for the Kolokuma, Opokuma, and Yenagoa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He was elected in the year 2015. Among his legislative interests are environmental and communication concerns. In Nigeria’s 9th National Assembly, he represented the Bayelsa Central senatorial district.
On September 4, 2019, he won the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election in Bayelsa State, which was held at the Dr Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre in Yenagoa and organised by Governor Darius Ishaku’s PDP Bayelsa State Governorship Primary Committee. In 2019, he was the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee for governor of Bayelsa state. The 2019 Bayelsa State gubernatorial elections were declared unlawful by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on February 13, 2020, after David Lyon, the rightful victor’s running mate, presented a falsified certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission. The court granted Diri a certificate of return, identifying him as the new governor. On February 14, 2020, he took his oath of office as Bayelsa State governor.

Douye Diri is a devoted Christian and he is married to two women. Mrs Gloria Ebibomo Diri, the first lady of the state and his second wife, Barr. Mrs. Patience Ama Zuofa Douye-Diri.
