His Growing Up and Family Background

 

Fred Amugi was born on 5th November, 1948, in Kaneshie, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. His father was an employee of Ghana’s Ministry of Works and Housing, and as a result, his family’s frequent relocation exposed young Fred to many more areas and cultures, including Western, Central, and Ashanti Regions.

Fred comes from a family of nine children (seven girls and two boys), and he is third in line. Even though it is difficult growing up in such a large family, Fred’s upbringing gave him traits of  resilience that would serve him in good stead for the remainder of his life.

 

Love, Loss and Family

 

Fred Amugi has been married since 1983. Fred and his wife have had two children together. Fred has lost his only daughter to cancer which really hurt his family. Nevertheless, Fred is a very good husband and father, maintaining close family ties despite that horrible loss.

 

Schooling

 

Fred Amugi completed Form 5 at Nungua Senior High School. He has not gone on to higher education, although he was very interested in the arts since high school; about a year before he graduated high school he started acting in television theatre after his literature teacher discovered that Fred had a flair for acting and urged him to try it as a career.

Fred Amugi bega acting in the late 1970s after high school, starting out with TV theatre; he became well known simply for acting in pieces that showed off his natural abilities. The first film role he had was in the film “The Other Side”; however, he caught mainstream fame with the TV series, “Opinto”.
